Trent Ellington drove in nine runs and collected five extra-base hits as the Whitewater Wildcats swept their Class AAA baseball first-round state playoff series from Long County.
The Wildcats took the opener 8-0 behind Trey Robbins’ gem on the mound and took the nightcap 8-3 to end the Blue Tide’s season.
Robbins allowed one hit and struck out 14, walking just two. He also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a homer and two RBIs.
Ellington was 4-for-4 with a homer and two doubles, knocking in four runs for the Wildcats. His two-run shot in the sixth sealed the win for Whitewater.
Isaiah Miller had Long County’s lone hit, a single. The Blue Tide also was charged with four errors.
Ellington added a double and a triple in the second game, driving in five runs. Robbins was 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI, and Chris Naggles was 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI.
Kenny Pickens gave the Tide a 3-1 lead in the third inning with a two-run homer. But Whitewater’s pitchers held Long County to just two hits in the nightcap. Austen Davis struck out five and walked one in 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief.
Tide pitchers struck out eight but also issued nine walks and allowed 10 hits to the Wildcats. They also hit two batters.
Whitewater advances to meet No. 1-ranked Harlem, which swept Mt. Zion, Jonesboro 15-0 and 13-0. Harlem is the defending back-to-back Class AAA state champion.
Long County’s season ends at 15-12.
