YMCA installs wheelchair pool ramp

The YMCA of Coastal Georgia Liberty County Armed Forces branch has installed a wheelchair pool ramp that makes the pool accessible to disabled swimmers for aquatic therapy. It also will accommodate a Special Olympics swim team.

The ramp allows the YMCA to serve community members who have special needs associated with autism, Down’s syndrome and mental or physical disabilities.

Aquatics director Emily Roszkowiak said, "As a YMCA aquatics director, I have had the pleasure of teaching children and adults to swim, which is really exciting. For me, however, having the opportunity to teach/coach children with disabilities is 10 times more exciting."

Individual swimming lessons for children ages 5-18 who have disabilities are available on Saturdays. The swim team practices from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday.

For more information, call Roszkowiak at 368-9622.
