Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Savannah, recently announced that 16 students in his district received nominations to service academies. Among the group are three young men with local ties — Liberty County High School senior Cody Waterman, First Presbyterian Christian Academy senior Joshua Rodgers and U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School student Mitchell McKnight.
Waterman, of Hinesville, was chosen as a principal nominee to the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., and a nominee to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. He is captain of the Liberty County soccer team, a member of the school’s Interact Club and a Bread Basket volunteer.
Rodgers, of Hinesville, was chosen as a competing alternate to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and as a nominee to the Merchant Marine Academy. He is a member of the FPCA band, Spanish Club, Interact Club and the school’s golf, tennis, baseball, basketball and soccer teams.
McKnight, a Bradwell Institute graduate, was chosen as a competing alternate to the U.S. Military Academy. He is a member of the soccer team at the USMAPS in Fort Monmouth, N.J.
