Organizers hoping for family-friendly 3 days

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. –  Arggghhhh! Swashbucklers, wenches, and scallywags of all ages will converge on Tybee Island, an island 20 minutes east of Savannah, for the 9th Annual Tybee Island Pirate Fest  on Oct. 10-13.

Country rocker Shooter Jennings and his band The Triple Crown will headline the fest on Oct. 12. The critically-acclaimed singer, songwriter and guitarist recently released “The Other Life” and is best known for hits like “Fourth of July” and “Busted in Baylor County.” Additional musical acts will include Journey tribute band Departure, Jimmy Buffett tribute band A1A, The Chuck Courtney Band and several other local performers.

The fest will feature three days of live music and family-friendly activities at Tybee Island’s South Beach parking lot on Tybrisa Street.

The festivities will kick off with the coronation at the king and queen at the Buccaneer’s Ball at The Crab Shack on Oct. 10. Additional highlights include The Pirate Victory Parade, Scallywags Costume Contest, Little Matey’s Cove, Thieves Market, the Yuengling Light Pirate Pub with live music, and the addition of several new kids’ activities such as a petting zoo and Ferris wheel. Every Columbus Day weekend, Tybee Island transforms into a lively pirate village, celebrating the colorful seafaring history of the Georgia coast. The Tybee Island Pirate Fest originally began in 2005, attracting pirate enthusiasts from across the country.

“This fun-filled event offers the chance to mingle with pirates and to enjoy true Tybee hospitality,” said Lindsay Fruchtl, marketing director for the Tybee Island Tourism Council. “Visitors are invited to escape the ordinary, if only for a weekend.”

Pirate Fest Weekend Passes are $22 in advance. Children 12 and under are admitted free of charge. Weekend Passes may be purchased in advance at www.tybeepiratefest.com.
