SAVANNAH — Armstrong Atlantic State University’s College of Education will focus on children whose parents are based at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield at a Military Parent and Children’s Activity Day.

It is part of an Armstrong initiative called Educators and Athletes Supporting Youth, organized by the College of Education, along with Armstrong Athletics and the Office of Veterans Affairs. Through the day, the university hopes to strengthen its connection to military families and raise awareness of their needs in and out of the classroom.

Activities will be from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the Armstrong Sports Center, 11935 Abercorn St. in Savannah. The event targets third-fifth graders and is free.

Nearly 80 percent of military children attend public schools and face a variety of challenges to learning. The stress of deployments, high mobility rates and frequent school changes can cause academic and social problems, as well as depression and anxiety.

Recognizing the needs for military students, Armstrong’s College of Education joined the nationwide Operation Educate the Educators. The result was EASY. Its goal is to develop curricula that foster awareness and understanding of military children. Armstrong hopes to establish resources for parents and children and “family as faculty” opportunities to invite military parents on campus to share their experiences with education majors and faculty.

The day will feature educational activities, including Magic Marc, storytelling, interactive technology and time with Armstrong student-athletes. Lunch is also included.
