Search for missing soldier called off

BRUNSWICK — The Coast Guard has suspended the search Monday morning for a missing swimmer off St. Simons Island.

Missing is Army Staff Sgt. Calvin LeBlanc, 30, from Minot, N.D.

Coast Guard Station Brunswick watchstanders received notification of the missing swimmer at about 5:20 p.m. Sunday from his wife. According to a Coast Guard news release, she reported that LeBlanc got caught in a rip current near the east beach on St. Simons Island and had been swept out to sea.

Coast Guard Station Brunswick launched a boat rescue crew and Coast Guard Air Station Savannah launched an air rescue crew at approximately 5:28 p.m.

A total of 5 search patterns were completed encompassing 26-miles searched in approximately 18-hours.

Brunswick County Sheriff's Office and Georgi Department of Natural Resources rescue crews remain on scene.
