No shelters here during hurricanes

Because Liberty County is so close to the coast, emergency agencies do not plan to open shelters to the public during a hurricane. Residents who are asked to evacuate, however, are normally directed to shelters farther inland.

During the last major evacuation here, for example, Liberty County residents were asked to go to a high school in Coffee County.

The destination shelter is normally announced as evacuation orders are issued.

After a storm, however, if residents are cleared to return to the area and they find their residences too damaged to stay in, the following churches schools have been approved to open in coordination with the American Red Cross:
