Healthy Kids day at the YMCA

The YMCA will host Healthy Kids Day from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. April 16. Admission is free, and the YMCA will provide healthy snacks and several activities throughout the facility to promote healthy activities for kids and families. For more information, call 368-9622.

Race to benefit Helen’s Haven

The Fraser Counseling Center will have a 5K walk/run to benefit Helen’s Haven Children’s Advocacy Center at 8 a.m. Saturday. Registration is $30. Five-member teams may register for $100. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the race starts at 8 a.m. Make checks payable to: 5K Run/Walk – Helen’s Haven, 203 Mary Lou Drive, Hinesville, GA 31310. Register online at www.active.com.

Derby Devils open season

The Savannah Derby Devils open their fifth season in a new venue with a double-header against Charleston’s Low Country High Rollers on Saturday at the Savannah Civic Center’s Martin Luther King Jr. Arena.
The event will debut the SDD’s new B Team, the Hostess City Hellions, who will take on Charleston’s Bruisin’ Betties in the first game of the evening at 5 p.m.
The All-Star teams take the floor at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance through the Civic Center box office or www.savannahcivic.com, or $12 at the door. Military, students and seniors receive a $2 discount at the door. Kids ages 3-12 are $2; ages 2 and younger are free. Groups of 20 or more can receive a rate of $8 per ticket by contacting the box office at 651-6557. Season tickets are on sale online through the Civic Center at www.savannahcivic.com.
AAU team seeks players

The Hinesville Lady Hawks girls’ AAU basketball team is seeking players ages 9-14. The organization is geared to players of all levels and no child will be turned away.
The team also is seeking volunteer coaches and sponsors for its upcoming season.
The initial cost to join the team is $105, which covers the cost of the uniform and registration into the AAU basketball league.

Golf to raise scholarships

The Liberty County Martin Luther King Jr. Association Inc. is sponsoring the seventh annual Golf Tournament of Scholarships at noon April 16 at the Cherokee Rose Country Club in Hinesville. Registration is open until April 8. The cost is $50 per player, $200 per team. All proceeds benefit academic scholarships for LCHS seniors.

Run for Ronald McDonald
The Savannah Ronald McDonald House will host the Red Shoes Run & Pop Tab Pandemonium, a 5K run/walk/stroll and pop-tab collection event, on Saturday, April 9, at the Ronald McDonald House, 4710 Waters Ave.
Runners will cross a bridge twice, earning the 5K the nickname the “mini-bridge run.” Strollers are welcome. Go to www.active.com, key words Red Shoes Run, to register; or get a paper registration by visiting Fleet Feet Sports, the Ronald McDonald House or www.rmhccoastalempire.org. The fee is $35 through race day. Online registration will close April 8. Participants are encouraged to start a personal fundraising web page after they register by going to www.firstgiving.com/rmhccoastal.
Packet pick-up is available at Ronald McDonald House from 9 a.m.-7 p.m.  April 8 for those who pre-register. Day-of registration begins at 7 a.m.
The kiddie run begins at 8:45, the 5K begins at 9 and the pop-tab weigh-in runs from 7 a.m.-noon. After-race activities last until noon and will include awards, entertainment, refreshments and guest Ronald McDonald.

Hank White scholarships

Scholarship applications are available for the annual Henry “Hank” White Memorial Scholarship and must be postmarked no later than April 25:
Grants available include:
• First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church senior, two $1,000 scholarships, applications at the church.
• Bradwell Institute senior, one $1,000 scholarship, applications in the guidance office.
• Liberty County High School senior, one $1,000 scholarship, applications in the guidance office.
• Active-duty military, undergraduate, one $1,000 scholarship, applications at the Liberty County Chamber of Commerce/Welcome Center at 425 W. Oglethorpe Highway and at the Fort Stewart Army Education Center at 100 Knowledge Drive building 100.
• Community, undergraduate Liberty County resident, one $1,000 scholarship, applications at the Chamber office.

Fundamentals in session

Cat Walk

Bradwell Institute is building a “Cat Walk of Fame” featuring former BI athletes who played sports at the college level. Tigers coach Jeff Miller and his assistants have a partial list of athletes and are gathering names and photos, but they’d like more.
To be eligible for the Cat Walk of Fame, the former athlete must have graduated from Bradwell Institute, played sports at the college level and graduated from college.
