Georgia Southern has earned the No. 3 seed in the FCS playoffs as determined by the selection committee Sunday morning. Out of the 20 teams in the playoff field, the Eagles (9-2) claimed one of the five seeds given out by the selection meeting, meaning they will host each game of the playoffs until they face a better seed, or until reaching the national championship game in Frisco, Texas.
GSU has a bye through the first round of the playoffs and will play the winner of the Old Dominion (9-2) and Norfolk State (9-2) matchup Dec. 3 at Paulson Stadium.
If the Eagles win their first game, they might have a shot at some payback. Appalachian State (8-3) — the only FCS team to defeat GSU this season — also is in the playoff field and hosts Maine (8-3) in the second round. The winner of that matchup will face the winner of the Eagles’ first game.
Sam Houston State earned the No. 1 overall seed as the only undefeated team at the FCS level.

The Bearkats will play the winner of the matchup between Stony Brook (8-3) and Albany (8-3) in the second round of the playoffs.
The road may get tough for Sam Houston after that as a possible matchup with Montana State — which was ranked No. 1 in the nation before a loss to Montana on Saturday — awaits in the quarterfinals. Montana State (9-3) hosts New Hampshire (8-3) in the second round.
With its win over the Bobcats, Montana grabbed the No. 4 seed.
North Dakota State (10-1) claimed the No. 2 seed and will face either Eastern Kentucky (7-4) or James Madison (7-4) in the second round.
Wofford (8-3) needed a comeback win over Chattanooga on Saturday to make the playoff field.
A loss likely would have left the Terriers out of the postseason picture, but Wofford was awarded a bye through the first round and faces No. 5 seed Northern Iowa on the road in the second round.
Neither Lehigh (10-1) nor Towson (9-2) were awarded with national seeds but were given the pass through the first round.
Towson will host the game between the two teams Dec. 3.
Rounding out the field, Central Arkansas (8-3) travels to Tennessee Tech (7-3) in the first round with the winner advancing to play Montana.
