LUDOWICI — The Long County Board of Health had its first quarter meeting on March 5 and several items of business were conducted.
To start the meeting, Coastal Health District Director Dr. W. Douglas Skelton swore Long County School Superintendent Dr. Robert Waters in as a member of the board.
Waters received an immunization achievement award for the county’s performance with school immunizations. The award was presented by Marianne Pappas, who is the district’s immunization coordinator.
She said immunization rates for all kindergartners was 99.5 percent and the rate for sixth graders was 99 percent.
“You have far exceeded the states standards with these figures,” Pappas said.
According to Pappas, schools are required to be able to show immunization certificates for at least 90 percent of students up to date on immunizations or the school can be fined.
Kindergarten and sixth are the grades audited across the state.
After the presentation, CHD clinical and nursing services director Betty Dixon reported that as a result of the success in the immunization program, the CHD will begin offering a dental sealant program to the schools.
According to Dixon, this program should start next school year, and dentists and their staffs will administer the sealants to children who qualify.
Long County environmental health specialist Fredrick Walton asked the board to start work toward an ordinance regarding gray water regulations. Gray water comes out of showers, tubs, washing machines, etc.
Walton said a public hearing had been held for the proposed change, but no public input had been received.
The goal of the ordinance would be to support water conservation during droughts and provide a manner for citizens to use wastewater on plants and gardens.
According to Walton, the ordinance only allows individuals to use the gray water for their own use.
After a brief discussion the board agreed an ordinance was needed.
In other business, the board:
• Heard from Long County Clerk Mary Ann Odum, that commission Chairman Bobby Walker would fill a vacant seat on the board left when former Commissioner Randy Wilson stepped down.
• Tabled election of a chairman.
• Tabled reviewing a new proposed fee schedule until the next quarterly meeting.
