The Liberty County Courthouse hosted a check presentation on Monday, May 9, where Sheriff William Bowman presented two organizations with funds raised from the Liberty County golf tournament held April 23. Both the Georgia State Association Youth Home and the Tri County Protective Agency in Midway were gifted $4,000.

Mike Leathers, volunteer for the youth home, represented the organization and expressed his pride for both the association and the money raised.

“We’ve been in business for over 70 years now,” he said. “There are not bad children. They just come in from a bad home life. We raise them as our own.”

The children who enter through the doors of the GSA Youth Home have a 100% graduation rate, and if they choose to go on to college, the money that is raised from an event such as the golf tournament can help send them.

Representatives with the Tri County Protective Agency also received a check and were humbled and grateful. In attendance for the agency were Shelter Manager Marissa Bush and Lead Advocate Lisa Johnson, along with her husband, Byron, a transporter. The organization provides 24-hour process-one domestic shelter housing in Liberty County. They also serve Bryan, Evans, Tattnall and Long counties.

Lt. Tuning of the Liberty County Sheriff ’s Department was also there to talk about the Project Lifesaver program.

“We put transmitters on folks with cognitive disorders like autism, dementia and Alzheimer’s,” Tuning said. “If they have a tendency to wander, we bring them back home to their loved ones.”

Bowman thanked everyone who attended the event and concluded by continuing to ask for support of upcoming community events for the Sheriff ’s Office, as well as any help in general.

“We want to make sure that we can help as many agencies we can,” Bowman said. “We’d also like to make it bigger next year, so please come out and support the Sheriff ’s Office, and anything that we can do to help, please let us know.”
