Nearly one-third of Liberty County voters have cast their ballots early
vote

Liberty County voters will get to choose candidates in two local races, and some residents will have a third race on their ballot.

The general election will be held November 5, with polls at precincts open from 7 a.m.– 7 p.m. While the presidential race has generated much of the attention, Liberty County residents also will choose either Democrat incumbent Donald Lovette as chairman of the board of commissioners or Republican challenger Michael Navarro and between incumbent sheriff Democrat William Bowman and challenger Gary Eason, a Republican.

Liberty voters also will help choose the member from the state’s 1st U.S. House District, as incumbent Republican Buddy Carter faces a challenge from Democrat Patti Hewitt.

Voters in District 4 will have an additional race to consider — Democrat incumbent county Commissioner Maxie Jones IV or Republican challenger Tim Blount.

Voters also will choose whether to extend the transportation special local option sales tax, or TSPLOST, for another six years. If approved, it is estimated it will generate $76 million over its span for transportation and roads improvements, including drainage.

A statewide measure on the ballot, if approved, will allow local governments to institute another penny tax that will be used to offset property taxes. The amendment, under House Resolution 1022, will put House Bill 581 into effect.

Early voting continues through Friday at 5 p.m. at both the Liberty County Historic Courthouse and the county east end complex in Midway. As of Tuesday, 13,047 Liberty County voters had cast ballots through early voting. Another 1,048 had used mail-in or drop box voting. That means nearly 30.2% of the county’s registered voters have cast ballots.

Polls at precincts will be open for voting on Tuesday, November 5, from 7 a.m.–7 p.m.
