A wreck involving a Liberty County school bus and several vehicles occurred Tuesday morning before 8 a.m. on Highway 84 in Midway. Eight students were taken to the hospital via emergency medical services for evaluation, according to Liberty County School System Superintendent Dr. Judy Scherer. Other students may have been taken by parents to the hospital to be checked out.

The bus had been en route to Liberty County High School and Midway Middle School when a Ford Taurus reportedly rear-ended it and several other cars hit the Taurus, Scherer said. She did not know how many students were on the bus, but said the school system was trying to compile lists of which students were hospitalized, which ones were released to parents and which ones were transported to school in another bus.

“We are monitoring the conditions of the students,” Scherer said. “To our knowledge, there were no serious or life-threatening injuries.”

Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Keith Moran said the accident investigation had been handed over to the Georgia State Patrol. He also did not believe anyone had been badly hurt.

“I don’t think there were any serious injuries but, again, don’t hold me to that one because I didn’t go out there,” Moran said.

Calls to the Georgia State Patrol for information were not returned.
