A gathering Saturday night at a Long County home turned deadly when a Fort Stewart soldier was shot and killed.

GBI Special Agent in Charge Stacy Carson said the victim was a 20-year-old male soldier whose identity has not been released.

The victim and some fellow soldiers were having a gathering at a home on Virginia Lane when an individual identified as Peter Anthony Petri, 25, was handling a firearm that resulted in the soldier being shot and killed.

Carson would not say how many times the soldier was struck.

Long County Sheriff's Office Detective Nicky Anderson said early Sunday that the incident happened shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday.

GBI has arrested and charged Petri with reckless conduct and involuntary manslaughter.
