Two Hinesville firefighters were injured in an explosion Thursday morning, according to HFD Capt. Kris Johanson.

They were injured inside a shed in the 600 block of Mahoney Road shortly before 10 a.m. The shed reportedly contained gunpowder used in Civil War re-enactments.

Johanson said the firefighters were unaware of what was in the shed when they entered to put a fire out. Several canisters containing the powder were in the shed. One exploded.

The force of the explosion knocked the firefighters out of the building. Their injuries were described as not life threatening. They were taken to Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville where one has been treated and released and the other is expected to be released later today.

Their names and the name of the owner of the property have not been released.

The shed was in the backyard of the home and the fire was quickly extinguished.
