Fire services in Sunbury and Colonel’s Island will be the topic of conversation at tonight’s Liberty County Board of Commissioner’s meeting. At 12:01 a.m. New Year’s Day, Eastern District Fire Rescue stopped providing services to their area. Before the meeting, the Courier spoke with Former EDFR Fire Chief Joe Martin.

According to Martin, he has spoken with the commission multiple times regarding the continuation of fire services before giving a 30-day written notice to end the contract. Martin also said he gave multiple options to the commission to continue the services before the contract officially ended on New Year’s Eve at 11:59 p.m.

A lease agreement with the Eastern District Fire Rescue is listed as an agenda item for the BOC meeting tonight at 6 p.m.

“We have to find a solution and have paid people,” Martin said. “How we get there I don’t know.”
