Ethics reform begins right here
Once again, efforts to end the sleazy but time-honored Alabama practice of transferring special-interest money through a series of political action committees until it becomes untraceable are getting attention in Montgomery. Once again, everybody seems to agree that it’s a bad thing, and they’re all against it, and they’re all saying all the right things about transparency and accountability and the like. So why is this ethical abomination still around, and why does it seem to keep falling off the radar?

Lawmakers back Delta to stave off takeover
A dozen Republican and Democratic legislators Monday signed the note to U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, urging his office to carefully review US Airways’ “hostile takeover bid.”
“Along with the constituents we represent in Georgia, we also are very concerned about the significant loss of competition and the likely impact on air fares and regional concentration this merger will create,” the letter states.

Alcohol and the double standard
“The problem Georgians appear to have with alcohol is that a lot of them want to drink their “sin” and ban it, too. This has, for some decades now, led to encouraging scofflaws, silliness and double standards. “Locally, this most recently cropped up on New Year’s Eve when a couple of watering holes got into trouble for allowing alcohol consumption after midnight — not for selling after the ordinance cutoff, but for not knocking the glasses and bottles from the patrons’ hands after that time.
“And happy new year to stupidity, too.”
