Scott’s All*stars sixth- and seventh-grade basketball team went 2-3 at the Hoopfest Tournament on April 12-14 in Atlanta.
According to president and coach Marcus Scott, the tournament at McEachern High School provided an opportunity for the boys to take on some of the top-level seventh-grade teams early in the Amateur Athletic Union season. Scott said teams from as far as Miami competed in the tournament, which also showcased some of Atlanta’s best local squads.
The tournament also allowed the All*Stars’ coaching staff to identify areas that the team needs to work on before they get into the heart of the AAU season and the national tournament in July.
“Even though we did not get the results we wanted, we learned that we have to be more aggressive. … On a positive note, the two wins were the program’s first two wins in an Atlanta-area tournament,” Scott said.
The team also toured Morehouse College.
“This was our first college tour for this season,” Scott said. “It was great to take a group picture at Morehouse in the same spot we took pictures with many of the same kids in prior years.”
He said many players exhibited a true desire to make college attendance a reality in their future.
“You can just see it in their eyes that this is not just something they have to dream about, but something they can and will make happen,” Scott said. “One thing I always tell them is to pay close attention now, because this may end up being the college they choose in the future.”
The All*Stars will play in the Memorial Day Classic Tournament on May 24-26 in Orlando.
