Long 7 & 8 Basketball Team wrap up season

The Long County Recreation Department’s 7- and 8-year-old basketball league wrapped up the season Saturday.
All the teams played 10 games, and each player got a participation trophy for completing the season.
In the first game, the North Carolina Blue and the Bulldogs were on the court. In a tough defensive battle the Dogs went in at the half leading 3-0, and held on to win the game, 5-2.
In the game the Pups were led in scoring by Gary Poppel who had 2 and Jamel Sloan who put up 3, while the Blue’s Christian Bass put up their 2 points.
Playing outstanding defense for the Bulldogs was Marganta Chihuahua, Rex Johnson and Hunter Bennett. On the Blue side the defense was led by Parker Kasperian, Aremone Ward, Gavin McNeel and Holden Riddle.
In the second contest of the day, the NC Blue had to take on the tough Blue Devils, and fell behind 13-2. In the second half both defenses laid down the law, but the Blue Devils had too big of lead, as they won the game 16-3.
The Devils’ top scorers were Matt Strickland, who put up 6 points, and Josh Gordon, who had 10 big points. Bass put in the Blue’s 3 points.
For the Blue Devils, their defense was led by Blake Edmondson, Alex Woods, Logan Ray, and Niaje Ray, while the Blue’s defensive leaders were Deauntee McDuffie, Trina Jones and Garrett Bleyman.
In the third game of the day, the defenses were once again dominant as the Blue Devils won over the Yellow Jackets, 9-4.
The leading shooter for the Devil team was Gordon who put up all 9 points, while the Yellow Jackets had O’Brien Nobles and Falyn Bond each score 2.
On the defense, the Blue Devils were led by Bree Strickland, Kayla Carlton, Xavier Carlton and Anderson Woods, while playing stellar defense for the Jackets was Logan Allen and Nathan Rawls.
The final contest of the year was a tough battle between the Yellow Jackets and the Bulldogs. And the Yellow Jackets won, 15-3.
Leading the scoring for the Jackets were Bond who had 9 points and Nobles who added 6. For the Dogs, Poppell put in 2, while Shane Wells added 1.
The big “D” players for each team were Robyn DeLoach and Austin Maynard for the Yellow Jackets, and Erin Ginder, Alex Carter, and Aaron Thacker for the Dogs.
