Mitchell drafted to Kings
Davion Mitchell draft

JJ’s Bar and Grill erupted in cheer during a private viewing party held July 29. Patrons were on hand to cheer on former Liberty County High School basketball player Davion Mitchell who was a first round ninth pick overall by the Sacramento Kings in the 2021 NBA draft.

Mitchell helped the Liberty County Panthers win the 2016 state basketball title and later had stellar careers at Auburn and Baylor University.

“It’s just exciting and I think the biggest emotion was the anticipation, figuring out where he was going to go, where he was possibly playing and to go see a game,” said former Panther head basketball coach Julian Stokes. “I’m just excited for him.”

Stokes said he was proud, not only for Mitchell but for another basketball star turned pro football player Richard LeCounte.

LeCounte was picked by the Cleveland Brown in the recent NFL draft.

Stokes said Mitchell always displayed his skills on and off the court.

“He has always advertised his business and what he is about,” Stokes said. “Him being able to go in there and provide both offense and defense, I think it will help Sacramento out a lot…it is a big plus for them.”

Stokes said the community came out to support Mitchell because Liberty County has always done well in being there for their residents and caring for their youth.

“I think we are a true embodiment of it takes a village because everybody is always looking out for everybody out here,” he said.

He said Mitchell is a great role model for the next generation of players.
