ALBANY -- The Long County Blue Tide track team competed in the state track meet at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany this past weekend. Despite some troubles with weather, the team ended up placing six individuals in the top eight of their events.

On May 9, France Smith competed in her first of four events on the weekend as she finished fifth in the girls high jump. Amire Saunders placed second in the girls long jump.

Shawn Young had to wait until Friday to run in his first event as he placed eighth in the boys 3,200-meter run.

Young and his relay teammates started action back up May 11 as he and DeMonte Clark, Trevor Kuchar, and Trent Rutherford competed in the 4x800 meter relay. They set a new school record with a time of 8:36.75, finishing 10th and just .046 seconds out of the winner’s block.

Smith then placed seventh in the girls 100-meter hurdles. Saunders ended her junior year with a ninth place finish in the 100-meter dash, just .04 seconds out of the winner’s block.

Wyatt Huston placed seventh in the boys 400 meters before Smith finished fourth in the 300 meter hurdles to close out the day for the Tide.

All six individual finishers will return for the 2025 season while all but Rutherford will return from the 4x800 team.
