The Long County Blue Tide flag football team made history in their inaugural season in 2021, but 2022 is proving to be even more historic. On Wednesday, November 9, the team defeated Glynn Academy 19-0 to clinch the Area 1 South subregion championship.
It was a low scoring game for the first half and both teams struggled to get things going offensively. The Lady Tide nearly made two big plays as Yuridia Sellars and Melissa Vazquez both dropped interceptions that would have been touchdowns.
Keniah Doomes’ punt return set the Tide up at the Terrors 9-yard line. Facing a fourth and goal from the 1, Samaria Harris took the direct snap and tossed it up to Jaci Smiley for the touchdown and 6-0 lead with five minutes left in the half.
Another Tide punt gave the Terrors the ball at the 40. Vazquez finally came through for the Tide as she intercepted a pass and set the Tide up at the Terror 37.
Makenzie Moody picked up 12 yards to the 25 and two plays later finished off the drive with a 15-yard touchdown run to give the Tide a 12-0 lead with two minutes left.
The Terrors decided to punt back to the Tide in hopes of a quick stop with just over a minute left.
However, the punt stopped just a few yards ahead of the line and the Tide took advantage of some confusion as Sellars picked up the ball and raced 30 yards for the punt return touchdown to give the Tide a definitive 19-0 lead as time ran out.
The Lady Tide have now won seven straight games to get to 8-2 on the year. They will finish up the regular season at home on Monday, November 14 against the Brunswick Pirates.
A coin flip will decide where the D1 Area 1 Region Championship game will be played on Thursday, November 17. That game will be between the Lady Tide and Calvary Day Cavaliers.
