St. James camp
Registration is under way for St. James summer day camp. Registration is from 2-7 p.m. and the fee is $50 per week. The camp hours are 7 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday- Friday.

Fast-pitch softball
Registration is under way at the Liberty County Recreation Department for a fast pitch softball camp. The camp is for ages 7-17, and will be June 15-18 at the James Brown Park softball complex from 9-11:30 a.m. each day. The fee is $25. The LCRD office is on Highway 84 in Hinesville, beside the National Guard Armory. Hours are Monday-Friday, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. On-line registration is available at www.lcrd.net. Travel Team USA needs players
The Travel team USA is seeking college seniors, recent graduates or professional players for a women's travel basketball team. The team travels across the Eastern United States, playing in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Through Travel Team USA, players will meet sports agents with international contacts. There is a onetime fee, which will cover uniforms and travel expenses. This summer, the team will have conditioning sessions for the upcoming season. Players with at least college level experience are preferred. YMCA Flag football league
Registration for the YMCA flag football leagues runs through July 6. Registration is open for ages 3-16. Practice begins the week of July 13 and games start the week of July 27. Volunteer coaches are needed. For more information, call 368-9622.
Calling all baseball players
There will be summer baseball tryouts at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at the Liberty County Recreation Department’s Cohan Field in Stafford Park. Players ages 11-12 are eligible. Players should bring equipment for the different positions they’re trying out for, such as a first-base mitt, catching gear, etc.

Tournament
The Bradwell Institute 2009 Tiger Tee-Off Golf Tournament is at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 27, at the Cherokee Rose Country Club in Hinesville. AAU River Street Summer Classic Basketball Tourney
The 2009 AAU River Street Summer Classic Basketball Tournament will be June 12-14 in Jacksonville. Registration is under way and is open to all age groups. Registration closes on June 1. Golf classic registration open
Online registration for the 2009 Jekyll Island Georgia-Florida Golf Classic is open. Registration is $270 per player until July 1 and $300 after. Online registration is limited to the first 400 registrants and includes green fees, cart rental, cocktail party and oyster roast for player and guest and non-player activities. Summer Slam seeks talent, vendors
This year’s Summer Slam is July 5 and will include local musical talent, food vendors, car clubs and DJs.
Summer Slam organizers are accepting registration for local musicians, vendors and DJs who want to participate in the one-day event that usually draws hundreds of people.
The gates will open at 1 p.m. and admission is $5. A car stereo contest starts at 3 p.m. and local musicians will take the stage starting around 5 p.m.
This year’s event will also feature a DJ competition.

Year of the NCO golf tourney
The Coastal Empire Chapter of the Association of the U.S. Army is hosting its Year of the NCO golf tournament at the Taylors Creek Golf Course on Fort Stewart on Friday, June 19, with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The rain date is June 25.
It’s a four-person scramble tournament and the registration fee is $30. Sponsorships are available for the following prices:

Pool now open
The Liberty County Recreation Department swimming pool is open. The pool is in Liberty Independent Troop Park on Highway 84 in Hinesville. Hours are 2-6 p.m. every day. Admission is $2 per person. The pool may be reserved for private parties.
Swimming lessons for ages 4 and up will be offered at the pool in two-week sessions (Tuesday-Friday), mornings: June 2-12, 16-26, July 7-17 and July 21-31, at 9, 10 and 11 a.m. evenings: June 2-12, 16-26 at 6:10 p.m. The cost is $2. Slots are limited. On-line registration is available at www.lcrd.net.
Sunday night is family night with only parents and children admitted from 6:30-8:30. Monday night is senior swim for ages 50 and older, from 6:30-8. Thursday night is pre-teen swim for ages 9-12, from 6:30-8:30. Admission is $2 per person.
The pool may be reserved for exclusive use by individuals or groups. The fee is $50 per hour for 25 people or fewer, $75 per hour for 25-50 people, $100 per hour for 50-75 people, and $125 per hour for 75-100 people. Reservations must be made through the LCRD Office.

LCRD summer programs
Registration for Liberty County Recreation Department 2009 Summer Programs started May 1. Programs include day camp, swim lessons, swim team, sports camps, taekwondo, golf, tennis, track and field and more. Registration will be accepted at the LCRD Office on Highway 84 East in Hinesville, beside the National Guard Armory. Office hours are Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Registration will continue until all slots are filled on a first served basis. Online registration is available at www.lcrd.net. Fort King George spring canoe excursions
Fort King George Historic Site has set a Spring Canoe Excursion program. Site guides will offer three canoe trips this season; June 6 and 20 through the old rice canals of Cathead Creek. The complex maze of rice canals produces a unique ecosystem. Old cypress trees, rare Altamaha vegetation and wildlife will be present and interpreted by naturalist guides.
The first two trips start at 9 a.m. will last at least two hours and should finish some time around lunch. The June 20 trip starts at 8 a.m. and will be extended into a longer paddle down Cathead Creek into Darien. This trip will last four hours and will finish at Skippers Dock in Darien. The trips cost $25 per person. The site will furnish all canoes, paddles and life jackets.
