'Dexter' is a piece of work

I thought I’d switch gears this week and make my foray into television reviews. So, here goes.
“Dexter” is a Showtime dramatic series based on the novels of Jeff Lindsay. The show, infused with some dark comedy, is all about Dexter Morgan, a mild-mannered forensic blood spatter expert for the Miami Metro Police Department by day and, well, a serial killer by night.
I was late to discover the show that will begin an exciting fifth season on Sept. 26. I wondered how a protagonist who was also a killer could work, but started renting episodes and was very soon hooked.
You see, Dexter was raised by his foster father, a police man, who recognized his adoptive son’s penchant for killing early. So while Dexter was young, his father, Harry, cemented in him a code to only kill killers along with the skills to avoid getting caught. Is Dexter a vigilante? Not exactly, but let’s just say he is definitely the lesser evil when compared to some of the other Miami serial killers he and the Police Department pursue over the seasons.
The worst thing about “Dexter” is that there are so few episodes. Each season only has 12.
As for the best thing about the show, there are so many. Dex juggles so much that every episode is a carnival ride of tension. I mean there aren’t enough hours in the day to go to work, log face time with the wife and her kids, trying to seem as normal as possible, and then, you know, stalking murderers, killing them and disposing of the evidence. I guess Dexter doesn’t watch much TV.
His on-screen sister is portrayed by actress Jennifer Carpenter. As Deb Morgan, she is absolutely nuts-o — at times tough, at times vulgar, fragile, crazed. Someone give this woman an Emmy. And she does it all pretending her real-life husband, the star of the show, Michael C. Hall, is her adoptive brother, Dexter Morgan. Wow.
But, as you know, when it comes to film (and television), I find that you’re either a fan or you’re not. How do I really feel about Showtime’s “Dexter”? I’m a fan.
