The Ludowici Police Department and the Long County Sheriff’s Office are working to bring an end to a rash of incidents reportedly targeting the county’s elderly residents.
According to Long County Sheriff’s Office Detective Tom Sollosi, there have been a number of incidents involving thefts, assaults, and cruelty to elderly people.
Sollosi said they’ve recently noticed a pattern tying some of those incidents together.
“We think we have somebody in town, here in Ludowici that is targeting elderly people…for thefts and sneaking into their homes…and this past month we had an outright assault,” Sollosi said.
He said an elderly woman was injured March 6 when someone entered her home while she was there and stole some items.
“We are concerned about our elderly citizens and all our citizens and we want to catch the person or persons who appear to be taking advantage of them,” he said.
Sollosi said law enforcement has increased patrolling in certain areas of the county but didn’t say where. He added that people need to be aware of the situation and keep their eyes open to anything that seems out of the norm.
“We want the community to be more vigilant with regard to prowlers, loiterers and anyone who appears suspicious, especially after hours or after dark,” he said.
The LCSO has offered a reward. It started out as $700 but Sollosi said concerned residents have made contributions and the award amount is growing.
Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Ludowici Police Department at 912-545-2222 or the Long County Sheriff’s Office at 912-545-2118.
