Nine people hurt in deck collapse Sunday

This deck at a Cattle Hammock Road home collapsed Sunday, resulting in nine people being sent to local hospitals for treatment.

Nine people were taken to area hospitals when a second-story deck on Cattle Hammock Road collapsed just before 7 p.m. Sunday.

According to Liberty Fire Services Chief Brian Darby, a second-story balcony estimated to be 14 to 16 feet from the ground collapsed with an undetermined number of people.  

Darby said one person suffered a compound fracture which required a tourniquet, and several individuals suffered minor lacerations. The ages of those transported ranged from the very young to senior citizens

None of the injuries was reported to be life-threatening.

Darby said Liberty County received mutual aid from Bryan County with two ambulances, Fort Stewart sent one ambulance and McIntosh County provided 2. Liberty EMS had four ambulances on the scene.

Chief Darby offered his appreciation for the response from Fort Stewart and McIntosh and Bryan counties.
