Hinesville Police Department officers descend on the 1000 block of Bacon Road in response to a reported shooting Sunday afternoon.

Police are on the scene of a shooting that took place shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday in Hinesville.

Hinesville Police Chief Lloyd Slater said the shooting appears to have stemmed the night before at a local Hinesville nightclub and spilled onto social media. 

According to authorities, the suspect went to the residence in defense of a female companion when he encountered the victim. The suspect struck the victim with a handgun and while the victim was laying on the ground fired a shot. However, the victim was not struck by a bullet.  

The victim, who was injured when he was struck by the handgun, is expected to be released from the hospital later this evening. The suspect fled in his vehicle and is being sought. 

Slater added this is an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public.
