The First Preparatory Christian Academy Highlanders baseball team is headed to the state championship.

The Highlanders completed their sweep of Flint River Academy, on Caleb Harmon’s run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh inning, to set up a GIAA Class A state championship series with Thomas Jefferson Academy.

The Highlanders swept the Wildcats, taking the first game 7-6 and then taking Game 2 4-3.

The Highlanders jumped out to a 4-0 lead in Game 1 and led 7-2 before the Wildcats mounted a late comeback. Flint River scored twice in the bottom of the seventh but Cameron Eason secured Hunter Normandeau’s fly to right field to end the game.

Jake Diven’s three-run homer put the Highlanders in front 4-0 in the second. FPCA also got help from four walks and six Wildcat errors in Game 1.

Mason Bruning was 2-for-4 and Evan North added a double and one RBI. Logan Brown also drove in a run.

River North struck out and gave up three earned runs on five hits in six innings. Lucas Martin struck out five and gave up one hit in three innings of relief for the Wildcats.

Harmon’s single to center with one out in the seventh brought in Logan Dore with the winning run in Game 2 to send the Highlanders to the state championship series.

FPCA trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the sixth, but Eason had a run-scoring double, and Brown added a sacrifice fly to tie the game.

Harmon finished 2-for-3 for the Highlanders.

Eason went the first six innings on the mound, striking out six and allowing three earned runs on eight hits. Evan North pitched a spotless seventh to get the win.

GIAA’s baseball state championships will be held at SRP Park in North Augusta, S.C.
