LCRD senior All-Stars win state GRPA trophy

A third local basketball team has brought another state title to Liberty. The Liberty County Recreation Department’s senior boys’ All-Stars team beat Douglas 76-61 in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association championship game March 5 in Effingham County.

The road to the championship game for the senior team started at the district tournament in Douglas Feb. 26-27. LCRD beat Glynn County and Douglas to earn a spot in the state playoffs. March 4, they defeated Barrow County 67-56. The next day, they downed Burke County 103-32 and defeated Jefferson 71-59 for a berth in the title game against Douglas.

The boys were coached by Cedric Robertson.
“After finishing the regular season with a 9-1 record, I was nominated to be the coach for the LCRD senior boys,” he said. “In 2014, I coached and won the state championship” Robertson said .

He said the LCRD team tried for another state title in 2015, but finished in second place.
“Here it is 2016 and few finished in first place,” he said excited. “It was a great week for Liberty County … hard work pays off ... I enjoyed making history with my hometown.”

The LCRD Mite girls finished the year as the state runners-up. The girls defeated Ware County and Douglas in the district playoffs Feb. 26-27 at the Shuman Center to make the state run. They defeated Tift County 47-36 in round one of state at Tifton March 4. They beat Baldwin County 35-14 and defeated Habersham 36-26, but lost to Fannin County 41-21 in the final game.

The LCRD junior girls lost to Barrow County 49-44 and lost to Pooler 38-19.

Other results from the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association District 2 Tournaments were provided by the LCRD as follows:
Flea boys: Defeated Douglas, but lost to Ware County in championship.
Pee wee boys: Defeated Camden County, but lost to Douglas in semi-finals.
Mite boys: Lost to Ware County.
Midget girls: Lost to Camden County.
Midget boys: Lost to Camden County.
Games were Feb. 26-27.
