The Liberty County Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Observance Association will award 10 $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors, in anticipation of proceeds raised from its eighth Annual MLK Golf Tournament held April 14.
“Our final tally is not in yet, but thanks to our parade fundraising efforts, the golf tournament and our sponsors, we will definitely award 10 scholarships this year,” tournament chairman Kenneth Howard said.
Sixteen teams vied for the title, including teams from the city of Hinesville, Hinesville Ford, St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church, Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, CH2M Hill, KC Brothers Homes and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
The First African Baptist Church team walked away with first place. Special prizes were awarded following the tournament. Roscoe Frasier won the longest put at 14 feet 7 1/2 inches.” The closest-to-the-pin award went to Ralph Anderson and Steve Welborn received the longest drive award.
“Each year we have tremendous support from our community, and we are delighted to be able to make an impact together and advance education,” Howard said. “The MLKOA corporate sponsors have made a commitment to support the organization’s scholarship goals, and we cherish this relationship.”
The organization has awarded more than $50,000 in scholarships since 2005.
The non-profit Liberty County MLKOA receives donations from local churches, businesses and corporate sponsors during its annual commemorative events in January and the golf tournament held in April.
