VALDOSTA, Ga. (AP) -- Valdosta is now TitleTown USA.

At least according to ESPN, which on Monday named the south Georgia city of about 50,000 the nation's top sports city. Valdosta has won dozens of sports championships and is a hub for high school football and birthplace of several major sports stars, including NFL linebacker Randall Godfrey.

Georgia Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, who was on hand for the announcement, called it "fitting."

He said "not to take anything away from any other community, but certainly Valdosta is truly legendary — particularly in high school football."

Valdosta beat out 19 other finalists, including Chicago, New York and Pittsburgh.

ESPN's SportsCenter will officially announce the winner during Monday's 6 p.m. show
