In 1987, the science-fiction spectacular “RoboCop” hit theaters and quickly became a piece of pop-culture history.
Now, in 2014, “RoboCop” is back. But is he bolder than ever? The new film pairs actor Joel Kinnaman with the iconic machine parts and doesn’t even give Peter Weller, the original RoboCop, a cameo. When the film starts, Raymond Sellars (Michael Keaton), CEO of technology giant OmniCorp, is in a bit of a pickle. His robotic war machines are making money all over the globe, but are outlawed on American soil.
The solution? Put a man inside the machine. That shouldn’t cause any problems, right?
On the surface, there really isn’t much about the new “RoboCop” that would surprise you. Still, the film offers an action-packed, engrossing ride, even if we’ve traveled a similar road before.
I’m a big fan of Kinnaman, one half of the crime-fighting duo from the series “The Killing,” and he delivers a decent performance. Meanwhile, Keaton is the perfect villain.
The cast, as a whole, is a treat. Jackie Earle Haley is totally wicked, Gary Oldman is a mad scientist with a conscience, and Jay Baruchel brings some comic relief.
But let’s face it — the movie is “RoboCop,” and all you really need to know is the action is worth watching. You do have to suspend belief once or twice, but for the most part, I thought everybody did bang-up jobs — literally — and I’d be willing to watch a sequel.
I’m a fan!
