Long County High School will get a new principal and new head coaches beginning next fall.

Assistant principal Sherry Lester will take over July 1 as principal when David Edwards, who is now the school’s principal, moves to the Board of Education office to become the school system’s chief financial officer.

The personnel change was among a number of appointments approved at Monday night’s school board meeting.

Also approved was the hiring of Sheron Jones-Daniel, now an assistant coach at Bradwell, as the new girls’ head basketball coach, and the naming of Reggie Wilkes as the new boys’ head basketball coach.

Wilkes replaces Deshon Brock, who left to become head football coach at Mitchell County, and Jones-Daniel is replacing Brian Todd, who is taking over as recreation director in Claxton.

Long County Schools Superintendent Dr. Robert Waters said both Jones-Daniel and Wilkes are “good people, and good coaches.”

Wilkes is familiar with the county and won a region title at Long County Middle School four seasons ago, “with the same kids that are at the high school now,” Waters said.

Jones-Daniel, who served as an assistant at BI under longtime coach Faye Baker, impressed school officials during her interview.

In February the school board hired former Appling County coach J.T. Pollock as head football coach. Monday, the BoE approved the hiring of Jason Anthony and Leon Thompson as coordinators.

Waters said the community can meet the coaches at 5:30 p.m. April 3 at the Long County Chamber of Commerce business after hours, which will be held at Long County High School.
