Contractors for the Georgia Department of Transportation are working on a resurfacing project on Highway 301/Cecil Nobles Highway near the Ludowici city limit.

The resurfacing project runs across Long County and ends at the Tattnall County line. The 15 miles of paving is being completed by East Coast Asphalt, who was the low bidder at $2.8 million.

According to DOT spokesperson Jill Nagel, there will be single lane closures on this two-lane roadway with flagmen and a pilot vehicle to aid traffic through the work zone. She said the work will take place weekdays during daylight hours, except from 7 to 9 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. to allow for school traffic. Nagel said that the project will continue into June, weather permitting.

Long County Board of Commissioners Chairman Mike Riddle said the project was only possible with the support of Georgia Department of Transportation Board Secretary Ann Purcell, who represents Long County.

"Ann Purcell is such a good friend and supporter of Long County, every time I have talked with her she has expressed a desire to help our fast-growing community, Secretary Purcell on behalf of the citizens of Long County I want to thank you for this project and all of the other ones you are helping us with," Riddle said.

He said the resurfacing project is one of the largest projects to be approved for Long County and it is another step towards improving all the roads in the county.

"Long County being selected for this project is such a positive thing, Highway 301 is one of our major roads in and out of our county, and one of the most traveled roadways," Riddle said.

The project is the second resurfacing to take place in the county in recent weeks
