Long County to honor vets on Flag Day
MR Flag day ceremony
RMR Developers will sponsor an “Honor our Veterans” ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Long County Court House, followed by a barbecue at Long County High School.
Joe Raymer of RMR Developers will emcee the event and Major Chris Carter will serve as the keynote speaker.
Carter currently is assigned to Fort Stewart and is the Assistant Chief of Staff of Training for the 3rd Infantry Division. He is a University of Georgia distinguished military graduate and received his commission in 1995.
Carter’s awards and decorations include the Silver Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Ranger Tab, Senior Parachutist Wings and Combat Infantry Badge.
He is married to Celeste Carter, and they are expecting their first child in July.
Carter received international attention in 2003 when he rescued a wounded Iraqi woman on a bridge in Hiniyah, Iraq, under enemy fire. He also gained popularity in Georgia when he raised a University of Georgia flag at Saddam Hussein’s presidential palace on live television during the invasion of Baghdad.
During the ceremony, a Bronze Plaque honoring veterans will be dedicated in front of the courthouse.
After the plaque dedication, all ceremony attendees are invited to the high school for a barbecue pork and chicken meal.
“We just want everyone to come out. Whether you live in the city, the county, or even in a neighboring county, everyone is invited to come out and honor those who serve in the armed services,” Raymer said.
“We especially want to invite all the soldiers and their families from around the area,” Raymer said. “They’re what the day is all about.”
