A missing Wayne County woman's vehicle was discovered Friday afternoon in the Altamaha River.

A body of a woman was discovered in the vehicle. However, authorities did not immediately confirm the body’s identity.

According to Wayne County Sheriff John Carter, a 2012 Chevy Malibu belonging to Willie Joe Vaughn was spotted submerged off a boat ramp at the end of Arnold River Road. The fisherman who spotted the vehicle notified authorities around 2 p.m. A dive team from the Wayne County Volunteer Fire and Rescue went into the river to confirm the make and model of the vehicle and discovered the body of a woman inside.

Carter said it took two hours to pull the vehicle from the river.

Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Detective Brandon Rozier said the body will be taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s crime lab for cause of death and positive identification.

Vaughn, 73, has been missing since last week.
