A mother of four children ranging in age from 4 to 15 is dead following a three car accident in Liberty County Monday morning.  The accident occurred shortly before 6 a.m. at Smiley Hall Road and Highway 17 in Midway. The crash injured two other adults and the four youngsters.

Sgt. David Laff with the Georgia State Patrol told the Courier that the mother, a Hinesville resident, was turning left on Smiley Hall Road in the direction of Riceboro when her 2009 Dodge Caliber was rear ended, pushing her vehicle into oncoming traffic. The Allenhurst woman who hit the mother’s car from behind was driving a 2004 GMC Envoy, according to Laff. When the mother’s car was propelled forward, a Jesup man who was driving a 2007 Chevy Impala in the opposite direction, hit the Caliber. Sources say it took 40 minutes to extricate the man from his vehicle. He was taken to Memorial in Savannah for treatment.

The woman’s children, who were with her in the vehicle when the accident occurred, were first taken to Winn Army Community Hospital and then to Memorial in Savannah, confirmed the GSP.

Names of the deceased woman and those injured in the crash have not yet been released. The accident is under investigation by the GSP’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team. The Midway police were first on the scene, and the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, along with the fire departments from Riceboro and Midway, also responded to the wreck, according to Laff.

The Courier will continue to follow up on this story as it develops.
