A Ludowici Police Department officer and a former officer recently were recognized for their work to keep the roads safe from impaired drivers.
LPD Sgt. J.D. Campbell received a Bronze Pin at the 2010 Golden Shield Honor Awards in Atlanta on March 25.  Campbell was recognized for his making several “driving under the influence” arrests in 2009.
“It’s not about the award, it’s about keeping the roads as safe as they can be, as far as I’m concerned,” Campbell said.
LPD Chief Richard Robertson agreed, but also praised for Campbell for his job performance.
“J.D. is an outstanding traffic officer,” Robertson said. “He is always highly proficient in his job and always acts in a professional manner. I am very glad to have him at out department.”
Former LPD Officer Frankie Goff also won an award. Goff was given a Silver Pin for his work in targeting drunk drivers. Goff was an officer with the LPD in 2009, but recently left to take a position at the Darien Police Department.
“Frankie is a dedicated and hard-working officer,” Robertson said. “He was an asset to our department when he was here, and he will continue to do well for the Darien Police Department.”
During 2009, Goff and Campbell made 90 “driving under the influence arrests” as officers with the LPD.
The annual Golden Shield Honor Awards are sponsored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving in Georgia. This year, the ceremony was at the Georgia International Convention Center and the keynote speaker was Medal of Valor winner Officer Bobby Walker, of the Duluth Police Department.
The awards given by MADD for DUI arrests are Bronze Pin (25-49 DUI arrests), Silver Pin (50-99 DUI arrests), Gold Pin (100-149 DUI arrests) and the MADD Red Pin (150 or more arrests).
