The Coastal Courier won five awards, including first place in local news coverage, in the Georgia Press Association's 2008 Better Newspaper Contest.
"Being named best in local news coverage in Georgia is a great accomplishment for Pat Watkins and our news team," Courier Publisher Mark Griffin said, referring to the paper's editor. "Local, Liberty County news coverage is the core of everything we do and we're very proud to be named best in the state in our category."
The awards were announced at GPA's annual convention over the weekend in Florida.
Judges comments about the first place award included:
"The presentation of the local news headlines is clear and to the point. The articles are diverse, covering several different topics. The writing styles are varied but consistent in giving facts and information to help us understand what's going on.  The accompanying photos are great and add to the headlines and stories. Nice paper!"
The Courier's other awards included:
Second Place Headline Writing
Second place for Sports Writing by correspondent Mike Riddle
Third place for Special Issues, Pet Gazette
Third place for Page One layout and design
