Three advance military careers

Command Sgt. Maj. John E. Smiley of Ludowici recently was selected to the position of command sergeant major for the 648th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, Georgia National Guard, headquartered in Columbus.
Smiley, the son of Hugh Smiley of Ludowici, is a lifelong resident of Long County. He graduated from Long County High school in 1983. He currently serves as a maintenance inspection supervisor at the maneuver area training equipment Site at the Georgia Garrison Training Center on Fort Stewart.
Smiley is a 26-year veteran of the Georgia National Guard. His previous deployments have been to Bosnia as a first sergeant in the 148th Support Battalion, and later to Iraq as a command sergeant major for the 648th Engineer Battalion. As the senior enlisted advisor to the commander, Smiley will take on the challenges of preparing the Brigade Headquarters for future training initiatives.
Smiley was accompanied at his selection ceremony by his wife, Carolyn, and daughter, Brittney.

Atkins graduates basic training

Navy Seaman Apprentice Nicholas D. Atkins, son of Daniel E. Atkins of Midway, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.
Atkins is a 2007 graduate of Roswell High School in Roswell.

Alford graduates basic training

Navy Seaman Jessica M. Alford, daughter of Kimberly A. McGlothlin of Hinesville, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.
Alford is a 2006 graduate of Bradwell Institute.
